Master Gamer
A high score is still a cage. The body reaches up through skulls and static · half champion, half specimen · winning a game it was entered into without consent.
Skulls, rockets, and a triumphant robot body flood the canvas in a collision of arcade mythology and existential score-keeping. Master Gamer recasts the language of Space Invaders · point tallies, target circles, binary overflow · as a meditation on victory, mortality, and the systems we consent to play. The body at the center reaches upward, arms wide: half winner, half specimen.
Grau's mark-making drives through layers of acrylic and oil stick, the surface alive with spraypainted fields of red, yellow, and white. Barcodes and data strings anchor the composition's lower edge · the machine still running beneath the chaos.
Why this work matters: At a moment when screens have replaced skies and algorithms assign worth, Master Gamer asks what winning means inside a system you never agreed to enter. Grau completed this in 2019, before the acceleration · it carries more weight now than when it was made.
