Fragments No. 2
A self edited more than it was painted. This time the interruptions take more ground, and the figure reads as redacted, legible only in the gaps its own structure leaves behind.
A second figurative study of a self built and broken in the same gesture. Where the first Fragments held together through tension, this one lets the interruptions take more ground. Blocks, ruled lines, and struck-through marks press into the figure until parts of it read as redacted rather than drawn.
The face surfaces and withdraws depending on where you stand. Up close it breaks into its own notation, hatching, coordinates, corrections, and from a distance it reassembles into a person who was clearly assembled. Nothing here is spontaneous. Everything is annotated.
The result is a portrait edited more than it is painted, a self legible only in the gaps its own structure leaves behind.
Executed in acrylic, ink, and oil stick on canvas.
